Joint Statement by Owen Paterson MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, and Sir Reg Empey MLA, Leader of the Ulster Unionist Party

'2010 is now upon us and the next United Kingdom general election is no more than 150 days away.

'So let's make this a year for change in Northern Ireland, when the positive defeats the negative.

'One thing is for sure. We can't go on like this. We need change to get Northern Ireland, and the whole of the United Kingdom, back on its feet.

'We can't go on with the same irresponsible economic policies that gave us the biggest boom and bust and is now threatening future jobs with more debt, more instability, higher taxes and higher mortgage rates.

'We can't go on with a class-war on aspiration from a Labour government that's seen the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

'We can't go on with the old style of politics that divides Northern Ireland rather than unites it and tolerates the scandal of double-jobbing.

'We can't go on with Northern Ireland relegated to the margins of United Kingdom politics represented by parties that can never form a government or even hold ministerial office at Westminster.

'We need a strong, modern Prime Minister leading a united government for the whole of the United Kingdom. David Cameron has proved he offers that.

'Northern Ireland, like the rest of the United Kingdom, needs responsible economic policies that deal with our debts, so we have stability to create jobs and keep taxes and mortgages lower.

'Northern Ireland, like the rest of the United Kingdom, needs a government that will support aspiration so that people from every background, not just the rich, have the chance to get on in life.

'Northern Ireland, like the rest of the United Kingdom, needs a government that will stand up for social responsibility and strong families so that we fix our broken society and the crime it brings.

'And Northern Ireland needs a new style of politics that brings us back into the political mainstream of the United Kingdom and enables people from here to serve as ministers in a Westminster government.

Under David Cameron the Conservatives and Unionists are the modern, progressive force in UK politics.

David Cameron offers change you can trust because he has proved that he can give strong, modern leadership to a united Conservative Party.

And at the forthcoming election people here in Northern Ireland will have the chance to allow him to demonstrate the same qualities for our country by backing Conservative and Unionist candidates.

So let's make this the year of change, for Northern Ireland and the whole of the United Kingdom'.
