Nicholson Attends Light Pollution Conference

Conservative and Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson was delighted to address "The Ninth European Symposium for Protection of the Night Sky" Conference at the Market Place Theatre, Armagh last week.

Mr Nicholson began by echoing the words of the Mayor by extending a warm welcome to guests to the historic city of Armagh. He referred to what a privilege it had been to serve as Mayor of Armagh during the early 1980's.Speaking as someone who was born and has lived in the county of Armagh for all of his life, he referred to his bias when welcoming those present to one of the most beautiful rural area of Europe.

"Armagh has a long and distinguished history, stretching back to the ancient kings of Ulster and to Saint Patrick. The two great cultural traditions in Northern Ireland share the history and heritage of this city, symbolised by the two cathedrals that dominate our skyline.

Armagh Observatory is a reminder that the rich heritage of this city is not merely a reminder of the past - it has the potential to shape our present and our future. The contribution made by the research undertaken by the Observatory continues to inform and shape our knowledge of our world and the universe.

Professor Bailey has described this conference as seeking to restore powerful source of inspiration, speaking as a layman amongst scientists let me heartily endorse that aim. For the layperson as much as the scientist, the wonder and inspiration of the night sky is something to be prized and valued."

Jim concluded by wishing everyone well at the conference, hoping that proceedings will challenge the wider scientific community, government, business and the community to work towards the protection of the night sky.

It is at events such as this, bringing experts from around the world into the city of Armagh, which put the Observatory firmly on the European stage.
