Nicholson Meets with NILGA Reps to Discuss Rural Development and Farming Issues

Conservative and Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson met with some local Councillors representing the Northern Ireland Local Government Association (NILGA) in Brussels during their recent visit where they discussed a number of rural development and farming issues impacting upon local government.

In a statement Mr Nicholson said,

"I was pleased to meet with the delegation of local councillors from NILGA who were in Brussels for a Local Government Association conference and to discuss a range of policy issues that local councillors are dealing with in terms of farming and rural development.

"Given the fact that local authorities are tasked with implementing a lot of EU legislation and that local councillors have a big role to play in a number of rural development programmes the meetings focussed on some issues that needed ironed out in terms of delivery of these programmes at a local level.

"The meetings also focussed on how to promote and work out better engagement between local councillors and MEPs when it comes to rural development issues.

"Rural communities are an essential part of Northern Ireland's social and economic fabric and I want to see vibrant rural communities grow and flourish in Northern Ireland. We all agreed that more needs done to ensure this happens.

"Local councillors told me that one of the biggest complaints they receive is over the excessive red tape and administrative burdens placed on these rural development schemes and that the Government must work harder at reducing the bureaucratic burden."
