Nicholson to make dairy sector a priority

Conservative and Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson told the first meeting of the new European Parliament's agriculture committee that he wanted to make a steady, fair and equitable milk price for farmers in Northern Ireland a priority.

Mr Nicholson was appointed as a full member to the European Parliament's Agriculture Committee last week in Strasbourg.

In a statement Mr Nicholson said,

"I am delighted to be representing the hard-working and hard-pressed agriculture and rural economy sectors in Northern Ireland on this important European Parliament Committee.

There are many challenges ahead, not least the massive reforms that will change the CAP as we know it by 2014. Added to that the increased pressure on the overall budget, the shifting of money towards the former Eastern Bloc countries and the tendency towards protectionism from certain member states, notably the French and Germans, and it is abundantly clear that the future for our Agricultural sector will not be an easy bed of roses.

I am particularly concerned at the hardship currently being experienced by our dairy farmers. Being squeezed on the one side by supermarkets who constantly try and trim pennies off their suppliers and facing mounting production costs, most are barely breaking even and some are operating at a loss. This is completely unacceptable. I will be making it a priority on the Committee to find a steady, fair and equitable milk price for our dairy sector as a matter of urgency while we still have a sector to save."
