Nicholson welcomes Draft Lisbon Treaty Referendum Bill

Jim Nicholson MEP, Conservatives and Unionists Euro candidate, has given a warm welcome to the launch by Shadow Foreign Secretary William Hague of a draft Lisbon Treaty Referendum Bill today. The Draft Bill will be immediately brought before Parliament if a Conservative government is returned after the next Westminster election.

In a statement Mr. Nicholson said:

"I strongly welcome today's announcement by William Hague, following through on the commitment in the Conservatives and Unionists European Manifesto to give the people of the United Kingdom their say on the Lisbon treaty. The Labour Government U-turn on a referendum has attempted to gag the people of the United Kingdom. With the publication of this draft Referendum Bill, the Conservatives and Unionists have cemented our promise to the people".

"A more centralised and bureaucratic Europe would not be in the interests of the United Kingdom, or for that matter the EU. That is why this referendum commitment is so important.

"By making this commitment to give the people of Northern Ireland and Great Britain the chance to have their say on the future development of the European Union, Conservatives and Unionists are wrestling power back from Brussels to local people.

"Diane Dodds and the DUP tell us that they support a referendum on Lisbon. These are cheap, meaningless words because Councillor Dodds and her party are utterly incapable of delivering such a referendum. Only the Conservatives and Unionists can deliver to the people of the UK a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. On 4th June, I urge the people of Northern Ireland to make their voice heard and demand a referendum on Lisbon - by voting Jim Nicholson 1".
