Nicholson welcomes MEP meeting with Agriculture Minister

Conservative and Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson has welcomed the meeting this week between Northern Irelands three MEPs and the Agriculture Minister to discuss a number of European agricultural issues.

Speaking after the meeting Mr Nicholson said,

This was a constructive meeting between the Minister and Northern Irelands MEPs. It is extremely important for Northern Irelands farming industry that both DARD and the Assemblys Agriculture Committee have a good working relationship with MEPs.

We discussed the rural development programme, progress on the European Fisheries fund and the upcoming EU Fisheries Council meeting in December, issues around the Single Farm Payment, climate change and GM feed policy matters.
Importantly, we also had a useful discussion on the implementation of sheep EID rules, which are due to come into force in January next year and the crisis facing the dairy sector.

The Commissions proposals for sheep EID have no regard for the realities on the ground and fail to recognise that the implementation of these proposals will result in a significant cost to a sector that can ill afford a further regulatory burden. What we must do now is focus on achieving a workable solution for sheep farmers so that the burdens placed on them are as few as possible.
